Open Cut
Safety, productivity and the right to operate are priorities for open cut mine research. We have supported work on an automated swing loading system for electric shovels, the science of rehabilitation and minimising mining impacts on neighbouring communities.

C3052 | 26/06/1997 |
Author: Richard Hume | BFP Consultants, Barrett Fuller and Partners |
This report presents the studies undertaken within ACARP project C3052, entitled 'Improved Recovery in Highwall Mining Using Backfill'. The aims of the project are to examine current fill practice as it applies to highwall mining, to determine, at a conceptual study level, .... read more |

C3053 | 01/07/1996 |
Author: Ian Follington, Brett E Leisemann, Mary Duncan Fama, Baotang Shen | CSIRO Exploration & Mining |
The success of highwall mining operations depends on - accurate prediction of roof strata behaviour in unsupported workings,
- safe evaluation of highwall stability and pre-treatment, and
- on a reliable method of pillar design to safeguard against collapse of the

C5007 | 01/05/1999 |
Author: Mary Duncan Fama, M Craig, M Coulthard | CSIRO Exploration & Mining, M A Coulthard & Associates |
CSIRO has developed highwall mining design techniques suitable for australian conditions. Because highwall mining is reliant on the self-supported capacity of the rock mass, highwall stability, pillar design and stability of unsupported spans are major .... read more |

C6014 | 01/10/1999 |
Author: Ian Clark, Graeme Boyd | The Minserve Group |
This report studies the potential of using backfill to increase the coal recovery. It is developed from the premis that placed fill will provide pillars with additional confirming pressure thereby increasing both their load leaving capacity and stability. Backfilling CHM entries using .... read more |

C6015 | 01/10/2000 |
Author: David Noon, Glen Stickley, Bryan Reeves, Dennis Longstaff | University of Queensland |
Slope stability is a critical safety and production issue for coal mines. For safety reasons, Mine Managers are required under statute law to regularly examine rock faces in active pits and assess the risk of slope failure. However, it is difficult to predict the progression to slope .... read more |

C8033 | 01/12/2001 |
Author: Mary Fama, Baotang Shen, P Maconochie | CSIRO Exploration & Mining, Geotek Solutions |
This is the final report for the ACARP research project, C8033, "Optimal Design and Monitoring of Layout Stability for Highwall Mining". The aim of the report is to provide general guidelines for highwall mining design. The guidelines will help guide mining engineers through the .... read more |

C9036 | 01/05/2004 |
Author: George Poropat, G Mamic | CSIRO Exploration & Mining |
The objective of this project was to develop a system for mapping, assessment and visualisation of hazards associated with highwall structure and stability. The project has produced: - an enhancement of methods of mapping and analysing highwall structure,
- methods
