Underground » Maintenance
Outcomes from this project address the operational, health, safety and environmental challenges associated with diesel powered vehicles in underground coal mining. The project's central objective was to advance a practical battery-electric alternative suitable for demanding underground and hazardous-area operating environments, while creating a pathway to reduce or eliminate diesel fuel use in selected applications.
Battery-electric vehicles can provide material benefits over conventional diesel-powered plant, including the elimination of diesel exhaust emissions at the point of use, reduced heat generation, lower noise and vibration, and the potential to reduce maintenance and operating costs. Together, these benefits support safer, cleaner and more productive underground operations.
The project focused on a certified, explosion-protected, large-kWh traction battery and supporting electric-drive equipment for the Australian underground coal sector. The resulting technology provides a credible foundation for mine operators and equipment manufacturers seeking to electrify mobile plant without compromising safety, while offering superior energy density and superior thermal-runaway protection compared with other lithium-ion systems in the market.
