This report describes the development and design of a drilling substitute (sub) containing torque and thrust sensors for use in rotary drilling or in downhole motor drilling. The sub is a mechanically simple inclusion into a drill string.
In addition to its development the report covers the laboratory testing of the sub and the promising results which show the tool has the potential to be used in formation recognition. The use of the sub will also help identify the loading condition placed on the drill string.

This report describes the electronics used to acquire data from laboratory drilling trials whilst using a torque and thrust sensor drill substitute, located behind a PCD drill bit.
The system was successfully used to gather signals whilst drilling through different materials. From the drilling trials it was possible to demonstrate the varied output of the sensors in response to a variety of materials.
