Safety training means helping people to develop skills, telling people what they should or should not do, or it simply provides them with information (HSE, 2016). Safety training isn't just about formal 'classroom' courses to work in the mining industry. Greater levels of safety and productivity can be achieved if the knowledge of how pit slopes behave can be transferred to the operators at the coalface. Any training needs to focus on the practical issues, with just the right amount of technical content and jargon to allow recognition of the hazards and efficient communication back to management.
A geotechnical hazard awareness training and language support video for open cut coal mine workers was first developed by Australian Centre for Geomechanics in 2004. This video was named “Unearthing Black Gold” and developed with the support of coal mining companies. This video was regarded as one of the most successful training tools developed for coal mining. It provides a standard level of open cut coal geotechnical training as the industry benchmark.
Although this video was very successful, with the advent of new technologies and recent developments in ground control management in the Australian mining industry, it has become somewhat out of date. Also, since publishing the Black Gold video, animation and visualisation technology has improved greatly. This new technology is significantly more powerful.
This current project has developed four geotechnical awareness and training videos for open cut coal mines. A series of new modules related to geotechnical and operational risks have also been included.
The videos are designed to be used by operators, deputies, open cut examiners, supervisors and planning engineers in open cut mines. The topics and the script have been developed through extensive consultation with the ACARP Industry Monitors.
The videos are:
- Video 1: Geotechnical hazard awareness training for mine operators;
- Video 2: Geotechnical hazard awareness training for mine supervisors;
- Video 3: Types of failures and controls; and
- Video 4: Geotechnical hazard awareness training for mine planning.
The topics of the videos fall under the following general areas:
- Open cut mining methods;
- Geotechnical hazard identification and controls;
- Types of failures and driving factors;
- Processes and systems;
- Geotechnical design review process.
THESE VIDEOS ARE AVAILABLE ON USB ONLY. CONTACT ACARP - nicole@acarp.com.au
