Noise modelling is an evolving science dependant on, and constrained by, a number of variable and complex parameters. This project sought to review the existing commercially available engineering noise propagation models, used within the mining industry, for rigour and accuracy. This review, and a substantial amount of first-principles theoretical work, was used as the basis for developing an improved hybrid model capable of handling complex meteorological and topographic conditions such as those typical of the upper Hunter Valley coalfields of NSW.
All noise models have relevance depending on the local environmental conditions to which they are applied. The noise model developed in this project is not intended to replace all existing noise models; rather it is intended as an alternative where highly variable and non-linear temperature and wind gradients occur.
This project has successfully determined those aspects of commercially available noise models which were inadequate for accurate prediction of noise levels under complex atmospheric conditions. The main objective of developing and validating a model applicable to virtually any realistic scenario has been achieved and a prototype computer model has been developed as a tool for further definement and development of the GEOCON model.
The second phase of this project will see the remaining theoretical aspects finalised (such as ground effects and refractive shadow zones) and a full contouring model developed.
GEOCON is a prototype model undergoing further development and will not be suitable or approved for general use until at least the end of phase two of the project.
