Underground » Health and Safety
The aim of the project was to construct a Relocatable Fresh Air Base (RFAB) suitable for utilization in the emergency plan for underground collieries.
A suitable unit has been designed and constructed to meet the requirements of Mines Safety Legislation. It consists of a base station that increases the life support capability of underground mines in the event of an emergency. This emergency may be a fire, explosion, inundation, fall of ground or a ventilation failure resulting in an irrespirable atmosphere.
The RFAB provides a safe haven with clean breathing air. It enables evacuating personnel to group together and plan the execution of an escape to the surface from an underground mine.
The unit is portable and can be strategically positioned and relocated as required to maximise its benefit to underground mineworker safety.
This project has now been completed and it has provided the mining industry with access to a professionally designed and constructed item that is simple, affordable, compact and enhances underground mine safety.
