Within this project, a parametric study of louvre transmission loss was performed. This parametric study involved discussions on the effect of the baffle width, percentage open area, louvre length, baffle angle, temperature, fibrous material density, and perforated plate porosity. The effect of each louvre parameter was examined to determine the benefits and disadvantages to its variance. The benefits of each louvre type were also compared and the differences discussed. The aim of this discussion is to aid in the design of acoustic louvres with the goal of developing more efficient products. It is expected that this will provide a qualitative example of how each parameter affects the transmission loss, which may then inform the acoustic engineer as to what should or should not be varied.
The parametric study was applied to case studies of existing louvre designs. Three existing radiator louvres were studied and their performance is predicted using the numerical model. Alternative designs are proposed, and their potential effect on the overall sound pressure level transmitted by the radiator aperture is discussed.
It is concluded that, while alternative designs may be found, significant improvements are difficult due to the limitations imposed by the efficacy of fibrous materials at low frequencies.
