Technical Market Support » Thermal Coal
In this project, researchers pinpointed issues relating to the use of Australian thermal coals, identifying relevant research and Australian capabilities for thermal coal marketers, to assist the development of the ACARP Technical Market Support Committee's research priorities. Researchers also reviewed ACARP and CRC thermal coal utilisation research, including analysis tools established since the coal CRCs concluded in 2008. The outcomes include a review presented as a “Guideline of resources on the properties and utilisation of Australian thermal coal” considering ACARP and CRC research on thermal coal utilisation. The project involved interviews and presentations involving coal industry marketing, related industry players and key researchers.
The four project objectives and outcomes are with reference to the report Appendices.
- Assist in defining research priorities to include more specific directions for coal research and technology assessment opportunities for marketing of Australian thermal coal.
- Report relevant Australian thermal coal research capabilities.
- Provide a review of ACARP and other relevant Australian research as a reference document for thermal coal marketers.
- Roadmap for a five-year research program on thermal coal for ACARP.
A listing of technical market support reports with abstracts was prepared grouped in coal performance and technology categories, and is given as Appendix A. The guideline of resources was therefore developed to provide notes on both coal quality and utilisation impacts by topic, with the recommended “best” references of ACARP projects referred to Appendix A and other resources. The resultant guide is attached as Appendix C.
The two Appendices can be combined as a final document for coal marketers, as “A guide of resources on the properties and utilisation of Australian thermal coal”.
