Underground » Ventilation, Gas Drainage and Monitoring
This reference text called 'The Green Book', was prepared by Simtars in 1996 in response to a need for reference material on spontaneous combustion which relates to Australian coal mining practices and conditions.
This new edition reflects the significant developments in knowledge and technology that have occurred since the first edition was published. This edition contains a new chapter on spontaneous combustion management plans, up to date information on inertisation practices and an expanded chapter on mine environmental monitoring. Prediction of the likelihood of spontaneous combustion based upon laboratory testing and computer modelling has also developed significantly over the past decade. The occupational health and safety legislation in Australia has undergone significant changes during this period as well. The focus of the legislation is risk management. Spontaneous Combustion is recognised in both NSW and Queensland as a specific hazard that must be managed. The legislations outline the processes to be followed to achieve this management. The focus of this book is Australian underground coal mining but it also refers to international best practice and research when relevant.
The material included is not meant to pre-empt or influence any legislative initiatives or policy directions related to mine safety in Queensland and NSW.
This text is offered as an ongoing contribution to increasing and disseminating knowledge about spontaneous combustion across the coal industry and to enhance mine safety.
